Warning: Spooky times lie below.

This month’s challenge is to icon all things spooky! We don’t really celebrate Halloween where I am from (Australia, although it is gaining popularity here) but I must confess, I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for this holiday. So I couldn’t October pass without a challenge paying homage to it.

What give you the spooks? An empty parking lot late at night; the creaks and groans of a house as it settles; or perhaps, a sudden hush while walking in wood. A dog, howling into the night; a lonely figure watching from a distant hill; footfalls from behind, when you know there’s no one there.

Are you afraid of the dark?

She wasn’t sure why she’d come this way. The long grass seemed to press against as she passed, reaching out long sticky fingers to grab at her legs. A crow perched on a fence post watched her progress from afar.

He’d walked through the park a hundred times, but never this late. The street lamps cast little pools of light on the concrete. They weren’t bright enough to illuminate the whole path, and only served to make the shadows between them seem all the darker.

From Lights Out (2013 short film) **see mod note below

The lamp in the Grandma’s spare room had never worked, regardless of how many times the bulb was replaced. She hated sleeping here – once you switched of the light, the five steps to the bed had to be made blind. She took a breath and flicked the switch, taking a step into the inky blackness. Straight into the arms of something very solid.

In the dim light, he could just make out his car on the far side of the parking lot. It was usually empty at this late hour and he was surprised when he noticed a rusted van parked next to it. Hoisting his gym bag higher on his shoulder, he squeezed in beside it, fumbling around in his bag for his keys. The van’s door slid open behind him with a bang.
