This month's challenge is to make your icons with a focus on complementary colours. Complementary colours are pairs of colours which, when combined, cancel each other out. This means that when combined, they produce a grayscale colour like white or black. When placed next to each other, they create the strongest contrast for those particular two colours. Due to this striking colour clash, the term opposite colours is often considered more appropriate than "complementary colours".
Which pairs of colours are considered complementary depends on the colour theory used:
- RGB additive/CMY subtractive: red–cyan, green–magenta, and blue–yellow.
- RYB colour model: red–green, yellow–purple, and blue–orange.
- Opponent process theory: red–green, and blue–yellow.
I don't mind how you break up you colours - they can be a mixed on your icons, or you could do pairing colour sets, with a balanced number of icons in prodominent colours. For example:
- ten prodominent blue, paired with ten prodominent yellow
- five blue icons with five yellow icons and; five green icons with five magenta icons
- five blue icons with five yellow icons and ten blue-yellow icons.
- twenty icons, using the complementary colours in any combination (that is, any number of red–cyan, green–magenta and/or blue–yellow icons)
Please don't feel restricted to bright, saturated icons either - there's a few muted examples below to show it can be done with softer colours! :)
Below are a couple of colour wheels to help figure our which colour pairs with which. Genenerally speaking, a colour is paired with the other on the opposite side. Either of the below wheels are fine to use for reference - they vary slightly, and that's okay if your icons do too. What's life without a little variety? ;)
